Braiding your hair in the traditional style

Braiding goes a lot faster when your hair is knot-free. The comb should be able to pull easily through the length of the hair. If you're working with thick or layered hair, use a bit of water or liquid hair gel to dampen the hair first.

This will make it easier to handle. You can braid hair when it is wet or dry. If your hair is completely wet, it will have a very smooth, tight appearance while dry hair will give a more messy look.

If braiding your hair dry, it is best to do it a few days after washing so that it is not so clean and slick. Slightly oily hair will hold a braid better than brand "new" clean hair.

Slightly oily hair will hold a braid better than brand "new" clean hair. tart with a secure base (optional). If you tie hair into a ponytail or half ponytail with a hair tie, your braid will be easier to handle and turn out a little neater. Once you get the hang of it, try to start braiding loose hair at the nape of the neck.

Continue braiding. Keep using the "free" index finger and thumb of one hand to grab the "back" section of hair (held by the other three fingers against the palm) from the other hand. Tighten the braid as you go.

Any time a strand changes hands, tug gently on the hair so that the plait moves upward, tightening it. Don't pull too hard, though. Repeat until you run out of room, leaving about 1-3 inches of unbraided hair at the end.

Designer Cornrow Braids

Designer cornrow braids are just like the aforementioned African-American hair braiding style, with the only difference in the pattern it forms on your scalp. While the straight cornrows form straight lines from hairline till nape or crown, the designer can consist of various design pattern on your scalp. Zigzag pattern is quite popular. You can have simple pattern from center part. Many also go for circular patterns and other geometrical patterns which are also a hit.

Single or Two Strand Twist Braids

One of the simplest African-American braids for kids are single or two strand twists. In single strands, hair is divided in very small sections and each section is tightly twisted after application of styling gel and then secured at the scalp with bobby pins.

When entire mane is covered, you need to leave the pins for a day or two. When you open the pins, you will notice the hair is nicely twisted. A hair setting spray will maintain the look.

In case of two strand twist technique, two strands instead of one are taken and intertwined to form tight twist and then secured with bobby pins. Though not exactly a braided hair style, this style is a variation of the same and looks awesome for kids. Accessorize it with colorful beads and your kid is sure to look the cutest one.

Micro braids

Micro braid hairstyles are known to be the safest option. Hair is sectioned and pleated into very thin braids which look very beautiful. You can go for partition or simply weave your hair in a backward fashion. With such styles you can either leave your hair free or tie it. This hairstyle looks extremely beautiful on short or long hair.

Styling twists

Tired of plaiting and braiding your hair? Try natural hair twist hairstyles. These are not only very easy to style, but also quite simple to care for. It is a great hairstyling option, especially if you are attempting to grow your natural hair. To get a simple twist hairstyle, the hair is divided into sections. Strands of hair are twisted aroand one another for an amazing two strand twist.

Maintaining your braided hairstyles

If Braided hairstyles are getting more messy and edgy: Dampen the hair lightly with an oil spray before braiding. Braid the hair damp, which tightens as it dries. Sit comfortably on a pillow or on the groand. Take breaks throughout the braiding so that the process is enjoyable.

Place a net or stocking cap over the cornrows before shampooing. Wet the head thoroughly through the net or cap. Put a small amount of shampoo in the palms and mix in a bit of water. Press the palms all over the head, pressing the shampoo into the hair as much as possible.

Wait several minutes then rinse the shampoo from the hair. Use gentle stream of cool water for several minutes to make sure the soap is completely rinsed out. Make a scalp exfoliator by mixing 1 tbsp. of brown sugar with 3 tbsp. of conditioner. Massage gently into the scalp in a circular motion for several minutes. Rinse or shampoo out. Oil the braids as necessary or apply a light spray sheen.

Pay particular attention to the scalp to avoid drying and itching.

Mix 1 tsp. of honey in 4 cups of warm water. Pour over the finished braids. Let the hair dry naturally to leave a wonderful sheen and scent.
